Today is the day that Katie Holmes finally declared her freedom! After nearly five years of marriage, she filed for divorce from actor and die-hard scientologist Tom Cruise.

Apparently karma does make its rounds, just like his former wife Nicole Kidman, Cruise was blindsided and devastated when the papers were filed.

After a whirlwind romance that started with Tom Cruise stomping on Oprah Winfrey’s couch like a giddy pre-teen, followed by a global love trek with images of the two “lovebirds” scooting through the streets of Italy, it became clear that something was slightly amiss. Why were they so desperate to prove the authenticity of their relationship? Why did Katie Holmes sound like and look like a propped puppet every time she gushed about her new love? After all the intense scrutiny, it was elected that this was a very rushed, rehearsed and purposeful union, and of course the scientology factor didn’t help the cause.

Now, five years and one kid later, the Dawson’s Creek alumn is ready to re-claim her independence, leaving her aging former movie idol in the dust. At 33, she is still pretty young and who knows, maybe she will use her single status as a way to revive her now stale movie career.

While their respective lawyers hash out the logistics of yet another high-profile divorce, lets go down memory lane and feast our eyes on the soon to be exes most intimate moments.

He will attempt to persuade judges that proceedings should be held in LA, not in New York, where Holmes filed official papers last Thursday.

Cruise, 49, is said to be ‘a broken man’ since Holmes announced her decision last week. She reportedly does not want the couple’s daughter, Suri, to be raised a Scientologist – a religion that Cruise is devoted to – and will ask for sole custody.

But Holmes knows that she stands a far better chance of winning her case in New York than in LA.

As a result, she has been pictured in the city every day for the last fortnight to make sure there’s no doubt that it counts as her home.

Cruise, meanwhile, wants to ask for the proceedings to continue in LA where the couple are normally based. He will be asking for joint custody of their daughter.

‘Team Cruise is going to assert that Katie doesn’t meet the residency requirements to file in New York, and that both live full time in California, specifically Los Angeles,’ a source told website RadarOnline.

‘Tom will file for divorce in California, and will request joint custody. There is absolutely no way that he is going let Katie have sole custody. This is going shape up to be a very contentious custody battle.’

It was revealed that the A-list couple had split earlier this week after Holmes filed for divorce, bringing an to end their five-and-a-half year marriage.

It seems there had been deep cracks in the pair's relationship for some time however, with Cruise thought to have been living in a separate section of their large apartment situated in the Scientology-devoted Celebrity Centre in LA.

Details have emerged of the unnatural life the pair were leading, with a source telling the Sunday Mirror: 'It was really weird in all respects.

'There were men in suits on all the doors of the complex and they would often escort you up to the apartment in an elevator keeping an eye on you. It was quite unnerving.

'Tom and Katie had a lot of people coming to see them there, to cut their hair and cook for them and stuff. Everyone knew they stayed in separate sections of the apartment but nobody mentioned it.

'Katie was really embarrassed about it, and didn’t seem to like people to see the way they were living behind closed doors. But she just got on with it and knew there was nothing she could do about it.'

The actors were not only living in separate bedrooms but leading separate lives, with Cruise thought to have been exercising a considerable amount of control over Holmes' life after famously converting her to Scientology – telling her when she can see her parents and insisting that she refer to herself as Kate rather than Katie.

Reports in the US suggest that Katie's desire for divorce came as a shock to the Mission Impossible star, with a recent photo of the pair on the set of his new movie Oblivion seeing him holding Holmes's hand while she looks away uncomfortably.

The estranged couple now face a bitter custody battle over six-year-old daughter Suri, with Holmes' decision to file for divorce in New York counting in her favour as the state generally doesn’t like granting joint custody to warring couples.

The white Cadillac Escalade and black Mercedes SUV have been seen near Holmes's apartment in New York City and the website claims the actress fears she is being followed by Scientologists.

Oh yeah, there is also a publication that is tailing her, the website reported.

TMZ gave this insight into the situation: "It is unclear if the two vehicles that have been constantly spotted near Holmes's pad are from Scientology or from the publication."

Media mogul Rupert Murdoch also put in his two cents.

"Watch Katie Holmes and Scientology story develop. Something creepy, maybe even evil, about these people," he tweeted.

And again: "Since Scientology tweet hundreds of attacks. Expect they will increase and get worse and maybe threatening. Still stick to my story."

The Mission: Impossible star was forced to put his marriage woes to one side yesterday, leaving a rainy Reykjavik Airport by helicopter in the afternoon to head to the film set of Oblivion.

Cruise looked stony-faced as he prepared for filming, with his wife Katie having filed for divorce last Friday - leaving the pair in the midst of a bitter custody battle over six-year-old daughter Suri.

Oblivion, which also stars Morgan Freeman and Bond girl Olga Kurylenko, sees the 49-year-old play Commander Jack Harper - one of the last remaining men on an uninhabited Earth who must protect the planet from an alien race.

Shooting a big-budget thriller while going through an emotional break-up must itself feel pretty alien for Cruise, but with production going ahead it does not seem as though the movie will be delayed.

Meanwhile the first trailer of Jack Reacher, in which Cruise plays the hero of Lee Child's popular novels, has leaked online - albeit a Russian-dubbed version - before being removed swiftly by Paramount Pictures.

Fans of Jack Reacher have expressed concern over the notoriously diminutive Cruise playing the character - a 6ft 5in military policeman.

Cruise is thought to have received a salary of $5million for his last film, Rock Of Ages, and together Tom and Katie are believed to have amassed a fortune of $175million during their five-year marriage.

Following the announcement of the divorce, a representative for Cruise suggested the decision to split wasn't mutual, saying: 'Kate has filed for divorce and Tom is deeply saddened and is concentrating on his three children.

Actress Katie Holmes and her 6-year-old daughter were lying low Sunday in their new Manhattan apartment as a creepy crew reportedly from the Church of Scientology watched their every move.

Holmes and her child, Suri, have stayed out of sight since she blindsided hubby Tom Cruise by filing for divorce in New York.

But five burly and menacing men parked outside of Holmes’ Seventh Ave. building in Chelsea made no attempts to hide Sunday.

The mystery men sat inside a white Cadillac Escalade bearing Tennessee license plates with the engine idling and the AC running. All casually dressed and 40 to 50 years old, they refused to identify themselves or even roll down their windows when a reporter from the Daily News knocked.

The men only got out of their SUV to photograph reporters interviewing neighbors in front of the building between 24th and 25th Sts.

Citing unnamed sources, TMZ.com reported Sunday that the men in the Escalade were sent by the Church of Scientology to shadow Holmes and her daughter.

Scientology officials denied the TMZ report Sunday.

“There is no truth whatsoever to the TMZ.com report (or any other report) that the Church of Scientology has sent anyone to follow or surveil Katie Holmes,” Gary Soter, a lawyer for the Church of Scientology International, told The News in an email.

The Daily News reported Sunday that Holmes had concocted an elaborate escape-from-Cruise plan that included renting her Chelsea pad weeks before filing for divorce on Thursday and asking for sole custody of Suri.

The papers were filed a week before Cruise’s 50th birthday.

The split is reportedly rooted in Cruise’s fierce loyalty to Scientology and the Catholic-raised Holmes’ fears over the wacky religion’s potential future impact on Suri.

Holmes is Cruise’s third wife. The marriages melted down, coincidentally, when all three wives — including Nicole Kidman and Mimi Rogers — were, like Holmes, 33 years old.

Cruise — who is filming the sci-fi flick “Oblivion” in Iceland — was said to be “deeply saddened” and taken by “complete surprise” by Holmes’ divorce action, according to the actor’s flack.
